(International) Piece of Newtons Tree to Defy Gravity
A small piece of Sir Isaac Newtons famous apple tree will be carried into space on the next Nasa shuttle, where it will presumably get to defy gravity, the theory it inspired.
The piece of wood is from the original tree that led Isaac Newton to come up with his theory of gravity, after an apple fell from it. The piece is normally kept in the Royal Societys archives, but British-born astronaut Dr. Piers Sellers has been lent it as part of the Royal Societys 350th anniversary celebrations. He will take it into orbit when the Atlantis shuttle lifts off on 14 May, with a crew of six, on a 12-day mission that is probably its last. The piece of wood will be taken into space along with an image of Sir Isaac Newton, which is also provided by the Royal Society.
The societys president has said that he is both pleased and proud that such an extraordinary part of scientific history and an important piece in the Royal Societys archive collection can make this historic trip into space. The tree piece and picture will be returned after the space flight, when they will form part of a permanent exhibit on the History of the Royal Society that the society will hold later this year.
Dr. Sellers joked that Sir Isaac would probably have loved to see this happen, assuming he didn suffer from space sickness, as it would have proved his law of motion to be correct. A physicist and mathematician, Sir Isaac is widely regarded as one of his eras greatest scientists. And he claimed that he was inspired by an apple falling from a tree in his garden to investigate the theory of gravity.
